THOSE MINISTERING AMONG US
Pastor David Hilderman Vicar Vincent Moore
WORSHIP TEAM
THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT
Don't Worry; Be Happy
December 11, 2011
10:30 AM
AS WE GATHER
The unknown always leads to fear and anxiety. We spend so much of our lives waiting in fear of the unknown, painting dark pictures of an imposing future. St. Paul reminds God's Advent people that we know the future---the future is Jesus Christ. The same Jesus who was born of the virgin in human flesh and blood to secure forgiveness and salvation for us will return in glory to complete His new creation. The divine blessings from the Word and Table of the Lord unite us and call us to fervent joy; the gifts of God initiate, nourish, and sustain that joy, refreshing our weary hearts with forgiveness, life, and hope. As God's Advent people, we lay down our fears in order to retain the holy joy of Christ---both now as He comes in the means of grace and in expectation of His coming again that we might dwell with Him for all eternity.
PARENTS OF SMALL CHILDREN
Our nursery is staffed with volunteer nursery care providers for children ages 3 and under. Please feel free to take advantage of this program so you can enjoy the church service undisturbed. The nursery is surrounded with windows to give you the freedom to check in on your child(ren). Note: on Sundays with Communion, please collect your child(ren) from the nursery when Communion commences, so the volunteer staff can also partake in Communion. If you are a church member, and would like to be participate in the volunteer rotation schedule, please contact Leanne. Thank you!
Please ensure that your cell phone is turned off during the service, as it disrupts the sound system. Thank you!

Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee
[LSB 803; vv 1-3]
1
Joyful, joyful we adore Thee,
God of glory, Lord of love!
Hearts unfold like flow'rs before Thee,
Praising Thee, their sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,
Drive the gloom of doubt away.
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day.
2
All Thy works with joy surround Thee,
Earth and heav'n reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee,
Center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Flow'ry meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird, and flowing fountain
Call us to rejoice in Thee.
(The congregation rises)
3
Thou art giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest,
Well-spring of the joy of living,
Ocean-depth of happy rest!
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
Fountainhead of love divine:
Joyful, we Thy heav'n inherit!
Joyful, we by grace are Thine!
Text: Henry Van Dyke, 1852-1933, alt., Public domain. Tune: hymn to joy,
Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827; adapt. Edward Hodges, 1796-1867, Public domain.
Blessed Assurance
[OSB 16]
1
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
Chorus:
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, This is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
2
Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending, bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Chorus:
3
Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest;
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. Chorus:

ENTRANCE HYMN
Hark the Glad Sound
[LSB 349; vv 1-4]
1
Hark the glad sound! The Savior comes, The Savior promised long; Let ev’ry heart prepare a throne And ev’ry voice a song.
2
He comes the pris’ners to release, In Satan’s bondage held. The gates of brass before Him burst, The iron fetters yield.
3
He comes the broken heart to bind, The bleeding soul to cure, And with the treasures of His grace To enrich the humble poor.
4
Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace, Thy welcome shall proclaim, And heav’n’s eternal arches ring With Thy belovèd name.

CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION
Pastor: Let us confess our sins to God our Father.
People: I, a poor sinner, plead guilty before God of all sins. I have lived as if God did not matter
and as if I mattered most. I have not honored my Lord's name as I should; my worship and prayers have faltered. I have not let His love have its way with me, and so my love for others has failed. There are those whom I have hurt, and those whom I have failed to help. My thoughts and desires have been soiled with sin. I am sorry for all of this and ask for grace that I may amend my sinful life.
Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you
all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
GREETING OF PEACE
Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you all.
People: And also with you.
KYRIE
Pastor: In peace let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Pastor: For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Pastor: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity
of all let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Pastor: For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Pastor: For those who work to bring peace, justice, health, and protection in this and every place, let
us pray to the Lord:
People: Lord, have mercy.
Pastor: For those who bring offerings, those who do good works in this congregation, those who toil,
those who sing, and all the people here present who await from the Lord great and abundant mercy, let us pray to the Lord:
People: Lord, have mercy.
Pastor: For favorable weather, for an abundance of the fruits of the earth, and for peaceful times, let
us pray to the Lord:
People: Lord, have mercy.
Pastor: For our deliverance from all affliction, wrath, danger, and need, let us pray to the Lord:
People: Lord, have mercy.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED
THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God
the Father Almighty.
From thence he will come to judge
the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
HYMN OF THE DAY
Rejoice, Rejoice, Believers
[LSB 515]
1
Rejoice, rejoice, believers, And let your lights appear; The evening is advancing, And darker night is near. The Bridegroom is arising And soon is drawing nigh. Up, pray and watch and wrestle; At midnight comes the cry.
2
The watchers on the mountain Proclaim the Bridegroom near; Go forth as He approaches With alleluias clear. The marriage feast is waiting; The gates wide open stand. Arise, O heirs of glory; The Bridegroom is at hand.
3
The saints, who here in patience Their cross and suff’rings bore, Shall live and reign forever When sorrow is no more. Around the throne of glory The Lamb they shall behold; In triumph cast before Him Their diadems of gold.
4
Our hope and expectation, O Jesus, now appear; Arise, O Sun so longed for, O’er this benighted sphere. With hearts and hands uplifted, We plead, O Lord, to see The day of earth’s redemption That sets Your people free!
